Effective Management Can Control Asthma
Effective Management Can Control Asthma
With appropriate asthma management, students can safely participate in all school activities. Managing asthma requires:
- Monitoring and assessing students with asthma with a peak flow meter to measure how well air is moving through the lungs (peak expiratory flow). When the airways become narrow from inflammation, the peak flow measurement could be lower and asthma symptoms may be present.
- Taking medication exactly as prescribed. Physicians may prescribe two types of medicines for students with asthma. One is a quick-relief medication used to relax the airways when symptoms occur. The other is taken daily to prevent inflammation from occurring.
- Recognizing the early warning signs of asthma such as coughing, shortness of breath, increased breathing rate, lower peak expiratory flow.
- Identifying and avoiding or controlling triggers.
- Intervening with actions from the student’s Asthma Action Plan when early signs are observed.
- Forming a partnership among the student, parents, the physician, and school staff to help students manage their asthma and provides support for the Asthma Management Program.
