Definition of Asthma Educator
An asthma educator is a healthcare professional possessing the knowledge, skills and attributes needed to help patients afflicted with asthma (and their caregivers) minimize the impact of this disease on their daily lives. Aside from having the requisite in-depth knowledge about asthma and complete familiarity with the latest expert panel/consensus treatment guidelines, an effective asthma educator will also have the teaching skills needed to help people with asthma develop an individualized action plan for sustained symptom control.
Often, an asthma action plan will necessitate certain changes in life-style. In this regard, asthma educators act as coaches or guidance counselors to ensure patients (and their caregivers) have a thorough understanding of the importance of such changes for symptom control.
