Nine Easy Steps to Establishing a Peak Performance Program in Your Local Schools
- Gain approval from your administration to approach your school system about establishing a Peak Performance program.
- Identify respiratory therapists who are knowledgeable about the disease, who can participate in the program and who can be a resource for school staff.
- Review the material presented in this guide and the Asthma Management Guide.
- Gather any materials you may need to establish a Peak Performance program. If you require additional materials, consult the resource list provided.
- Contact the school administration and/or the school nurse (a sample letter is provided) to set up an appointment to tell them about the program. You may want to contact the school nurse first because they can provide assistance in approaching the administration.
- Educate school staff about asthma and its management and instruct in the use of the peak flow meter.
- Give classroom presentations to help all children understand the disease.
- Check back with school staff on a regular basis and serve as a resource to answer questions they may have.
- Help the children in your community operate at Peak Performance.
