Who and When to Approach for Radio PSAs

Most local stations have a staff position called Public Service Director who handles public service announcements. He/she will distribute the announcement to the appropriate DJs or personnel for airing. The public service director can provide information on all the station's public service programming and policies. Written PSA scripts should be mailed or delivered to the public service director two weeks in advance of the optimum time for airing the spots. Follow up with a phone call to be sure the script was received, as stations require significant lead time for PSAs (more than for regular commercials or news stories). Then a day or two in advance of the time for airing the piece, make another call to the public service director to make a little "pitch" to get it aired. If a very small local station does not have a designated public service director, make a phone call to the station and ask who should receive PSAs.
