Utilizing Your Institution’s Public Relations Department
Peak Performance USA is a program that will bring public recognition to respiratory care, your department and your institution. In addition, because your institution will receive exposure, it will be advantageous for you to approach your institution’s public relations department.
Your PR department has the skills, resources and media contacts to get exposure of your efforts and your institution. However, before you arrange an appointment with your PR Director, have the following items already prepared:
- Demonstrate the potential of the program (i.e., how many schools, teachers, children and families Peak Performance USA will reach).
- Have a plan of action and timetable prepared so that they know the timing of your Peak Performance program.
- Provide your PR staff with all the necessary information they may need form the Peak Performance USA packet.
- Find volunteers from your institution to function as resource personnel and speakers. Provide this list to your PR department.
With your PR department’s assistance, your Peak Performance USA program can be successful and rewarding.
- Obstruction vary according to the individual and should be identified for each patient.
- Criteria for initiating or modifying treatment: a drop in PEF, early signs or early symptoms.
- List of steps to take in managing an acute asthma episode (i.e. removing the precipitating trigger, giving medication per physician’s instruction, avoiding strenuous physical activity, and keeping the child calm).
- Specific criteria for seeking emergency medical care, including a pattern of declining PEF; failure of medications to control worsening symptoms; difficulty in breathing (wheeze may be absent), walking, or talking; intercostals retractions; blue fingernails or lips.
- Observable signs that long-term therapy is less than optimal, such as sleep interruption and/or consistently low or highly variable PEF. Such signs should be discussed with the child’s physician.
